It is one of the most-asked questions in language learning, and one of the most misanswered: how many words does a native English speaker actually know? The honest answer is a range, not a number - and once you see why, the contradictory figures you find online stop being contradictory.

The short answer: a range, not a number
If you want a single figure, the most defensible one for an educated adult native speaker is somewhere between 15,000 and 20,000 word families. But that range hides more than it reveals. "How many words does a native know" is really several different questions wearing one coat, and what you count - and what you mean by "know" - can move the number by tens of thousands.
What it means to 'know' a word
Vocabulary comes in two layers. Your passive, or receptive, vocabulary is every word you understand when you read or hear it. Your active, or productive, vocabulary is the smaller set you actually reach for when you speak or write. For almost everyone the passive layer is far larger: you recognise thousands of words you would never produce on your own. Because words thin out predictably by frequency, a well-designed sample of a few hundred words can estimate a vocabulary of many thousands. Why the numbers you see disagree
This is why popular figures swing from "the average person knows 20,000 words" to 40,000, to headlines about children learning ten words a day. They are usually all defensible and all measuring different things. When two sources seem to contradict each other, the disagreement is almost always in the definitions, not the data. Fix the unit and the estimates cluster far more tightly than the headlines suggest.
- Word families vs. word forms: counting know, knew and known as one or as three roughly halves or doubles the total.
